It's a girl!!!

Meet our little girl, Kyah Mae Terpening.


One of the first things the ultrasound technician did was ask if we wanted to know the sex of our baby. We emphatically said yes. So she quickly maneuvered the wand into position and pulled up a very revealing shot of Kyah, and then asked if we had any guesses. I immediately said girl! There was no denying it. It was obvious. I then commented that a little modesty would be nice. Of course, Kyah had no idea anyone was staring in at her. : )

We probably saw Kyah's legs more than just about any other body part. She was moving like crazy throughout the ultrasound. The technician said that she did three somersaults while we were there and was quite active. She was moving so much that it made the technician's job of getting specific pictures a little difficult. : ) She's been very active for quite a few weeks now. Though, I haven't been able to feel her kick yet. : (

We couldn't be more excited about our little girl. We just passed the halfway point in the pregnancy. She'll be here before we know it.

Poll results

Alright, 7 of you thought we were going to have a boy, 18 of you thought we were having a girl, and just one of you couldn't risk the 50/50 chance and voted "I don't know." We'll let you know what the official answer is after we talk to our parents this coming weekend. If you want to know sooner, call or text us.

We can tell you that the doctor said our little baby is completely healthy and doing well! Oh, and that the baby is super active. He/she did three somersaults during the ultrasound... and showed a lot of leg. : )

A mustache for a good cause

I guess I should just explain why I did it. A very good friend of mine got married recently and a few of us groomsmen thought it would be funny to grow some crazy facial hair for the wedding. Well, not for the wedding per se, but for the wedding rehearsal. It was for a prank. I spent two months growing the man's-man beard. Needless to say, it was much to the chagrin of Abby. She was a good sport up until it got a little unruly.

This is the sweet-looking style I chose for my prank. Looks pretty good, right!


I'm not sure how I got Abby to smile for this picture. She didn't even want to be seen with me. I don't understand why not.


As you can see, the mustache was a key part of the prank. I spent two months growing that beard and I was sure going to make it worth it. We wore those mustaches like they were already out of style.

Based on Abby's reaction to the beard and sweet mustache with a flare, I figured I better try a few other styles before I shaved it all off because it's probably going to be a very LONG time before it ever happens again.



I hope Matt appreciates what we did for him.

Watch the tummy grow

I've been taking pictures of Abby every week since the beginning of January so that we could look back and see how her tummy has grown from week to week. It's been really fun to look back, especially in recent weeks. The video shows a picture of Abby every other week from Jan. 10 to March 23. Enjoy.

We are in our 19th week of pregnancy and this week the baby is 6 inches long and weighs a half a pound. Less than two weeks until we find out if we're having a boy or a girl.

Baby bumpdate

Week 16 is coming to a close and we're about to start our 17th week of pregnancy. It's amazing how much faster the weeks fly by now compared to the first two months. We're nearly halfway there, and with not much of a baby bump to show for it. It's getting there though.

Abby had a checkup on Wednesday and got to hear our baby's heartbeat. She said it was 142 beats per minute this time. The doctor said everything looked and sounded normal.

We find out the sex of our baby on April 6 - mark your calendars for the big day.

Some recent highlights:
- Abby felt the baby kick for the first time about two weeks ago. And ever since then the kicks have grown more frequent. It's fun seeing Abby's reaction to the kicks and I love hearing about them. I guess it will be a few more weeks before I can feel the baby kick. Sad.
- Abby was napping on the couch when the neighbor rang the doorbell; it startled both her and the baby. How did she know? The baby kicked her immediately. : )
- Abby's food aversions have diminished substantially.
- She's only thrown up once in the last two weeks. Hooray!
- On Saturday she got up and made us breakfast. That hasn't happened in quite some time. She proceeded to vacuum the house, pull weeds, and wash and vacuum BOTH cars. She then rewarded herself with a pedicure. LOL.

According to What to Expect When You're Expecting, our baby is practicing sucking and swallowing as s/he gets ready for the real thing: a breast or bottle! S/he's about the size of your palm, weighs about five ounces, and s/he's developing some body fat. His/her heart is now regulated by his/her brain to beat 140 to 150 times per minute — about twice as fast as yours!

And since Abby's body is working double time to take care of her and the baby, this is what you can find her doing most of the time.

(Again, I exclaim, isn't she cute?!)

A special date in history

It's hard to believe that it's been 11 years since Abby and I first started dating - March 3, 1999. We've come a long ways in 11 years. I knew shortly after we started dating that she was the one; the love of my life. We dated long distance through college, and then got married the summer following graduation. We've enjoyed 6 1/2 years of wonderful marriage, and now we're about to become parents. I couldn't be more happy or thankful for my wonderful wife!
